You’ve finished your run. The furnace is cooling down, the data looks good, and now you’re staring at a pile of used crucibles on the bench. Most labs don’t give much thought to what happens next—those little cups just end up in the trash, or worse, in the wrong bin. But here’s the thing: how you dispose of your crucibles matters more than you’d think. It affects your lab’s safety, your compliance records, and honestly, your wallet too.

Let’s break it down by material, because not all crucibles are created equal—and neither is their disposal.

Aluminum Crucibles: The Easy One (Almost)

Aluminum pans and crucibles are the workhorses of DSC labs. They’re cheap, they work well, and you go through a lot of them. The good news? Aluminum is recyclable.

What to do:

  • If the sample residue is non-hazardous (polymers, simple organics), you can toss them in your aluminum recycling bin—just make sure they’re clean enough that your recycling facility won’t reject the batch.
  • If the sample contained anything toxic, corrosive, or chemically reactive, don’t recycle. Place them in a designated hazardous waste container and follow your institution’s protocols.

Pro tip: Many labs keep a “clean” aluminum crucible bin and a “dirty” one. It takes two extra seconds and saves you a headache during waste audit time.

Alumina (Ceramic) Crucibles: Not So Simple

Alumina crucibles—whether they’re 25μL cups for Hitachi instruments or the larger 90μL TA-style pans—don’t melt or deform easily, which is great for testing but tricky for disposal. They’re technically ceramic, but you can’t just toss them in with your coffee mugs.

Platinum Crucibles: Don’t Even Think About the Trash

  • After use, clean the crucible thoroughly with appropriate solvents or acids (depending on your sample).

  • Used graphite crucibles should go into your general solid waste, but check with your EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) team first. Some institutions classify carbon-containing waste separately.
  • Don’t recycle them with metals or ceramics—graphite contamination can ruin an entire recycling batch.
  • If the graphite has been exposed to reactive chemicals or high-temperature decomposition products, treat as hazardous.

Zirconia and Specialty Ceramic Crucibles

These are the tough ones—designed for extreme temperatures and aggressive environments. They’re also more expensive and sometimes harder to replace.

  • Clean and inspect before disposal. Sometimes a zirconia crucible that looks “done” just needs a good cleaning and can be reused.
  • If disposal is necessary, follow the same protocol as alumina: general ceramic waste if clean, hazardous waste if contaminated.

  1. Always know what was in the crucible. The sample residue is often more hazardous than the crucible itself. A clean aluminum pan is recyclable; the same pan with cadmium residue is not.
  2. Label your waste containers. “Crucible waste” isn’t specific enough. Write the material type and whether it’s clean or contaminated.
  3. Train your team. New grad students and temp researchers are the most likely to toss a platinum crucible in the trash. A five-minute orientation saves you hundreds of dollars.
  4. Check your local regulations. Waste disposal rules vary by country, state, and even city. What’s fine in one jurisdiction might get you fined in another.
